Sanctuary Baines' Camp

Adventure, enchantment and ‘Luxury, naturally’ - all delivered with a quiet, understated charm and understanding of place – is the guiding philosophy of Sanctuary Retreats and one of their smallest camps, Sanctuary Baines’ Camp. Sanctuary Baines’ Camp is located on a vast private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana’s Okavango Delta and with its vast and diverse wildlife species is one of the premium destinations in the world for a dynamic safari experience and offers a truly unique wilderness safari in Africa.

An intimate safari camp, Sanctuary Baines’ was named after the 19th century explorer and painter Thomas Baines. This is Sanctuary’s smallest camp with just five suites set on elevated platforms in the tree line with wooden decks that offer expansive views over the permanent water of the Boro River and a lagoon teeming with life. An eco-friendly property, Sanctuary Baines’ Camp was built using only commercially grown wood, with over 150,000 recycled aluminum cans incorporated within the walls to provide insulation.

Things To Do

The game viewing around camp is thrilling. Water crossings are part of the adventure and watching zebra standing bellydeep grazing is a sight to see! Because Sanctuary Baines’ Camp is set in a private concession, there is the opportunity to venture out after dark on night game drives to see the nocturnal animals. Key wildlife include: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, impala, zebra, wild dog, hyena, and hippo.

The following activities are included in your stay:

Game Drives: Enjoy game drives, spotting wildlife from open-sided 4X4 vehicles, accompanied by professional guides. Because the camp is located on a private concession, guests have the opportunity to see animals up close on both morning and evening game drives to discover incredible nocturnal species.

Mokoro Excursions and Motorized Boating: One of the best ways to view the wildlife is in a mokoro, a locally made dugout canoe or a motorized boat. Explore the waterways and lagoons that make up the Okavango Delta as you see the plains game from a new angle. (Subject to water levels). Generally mokoros are available from January to October and motorized boating from February to September but can’t be guaranteed.

Walking Safaris: Discover the signs of the bush, accompanied by your guide and armed ranger on exciting walking safaris. The camp is set in a private concession meaning guests can get very close in perfect safety with one of the guides.

Bush Skills Adventure: Learn what it takes to survive in the delta from local expert guides that are ready to share their knowledge and expertise. You will learn how to pole a mokoro, make traditional spears for fishing and how to catch fish in the delta, track and identify animal foot prints, find water in the bush, navigate the stars, and many other skills that will make you an African wilderness expert. By day put your bush skills to the test, while at night indulge in the luxuries of this five star camp.
