Dress for a muddy rainforest hike: long trousers, long sleeves, sturdy waterproof hiking boots, gaiters, gardening-style gloves for gripping vegetation, and a waterproof jacket. Bring a small daypack, water, and a camera without flash, which is not permitted near the gorillas. Hiring a local porter is strongly recommended, both for help on steep sections and for direct community support. Rwanda is known for mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park, Kigali, conservation, and high-end lodges. The experience is intimate, permit-led, and very different from a savanna safari.
