Australia's Luxury Travel Who's Who: Award-Winning Lodges and What's on the Horizon
Australia

Australia's luxury lodges are more than a place to stay. They put travelers in some of the country's most remarkable settings, from private islands on the Great Barrier Reef to remote cattle stations in the Kimberley and wilderness retreats in Tasmania.
Recent international awards have brought renewed attention to many of these properties, while a collection of new openings and renovations is giving travelers even more reasons to plan a visit.
Here's a look at the names making headlines and what's coming next in Australian luxury travel.
The 2026 Michelin Three-Key Club
Three Australian lodges now hold the MICHELIN Guide's highest hotel distinction, Three Keys, recognizing extraordinary stays. Each offers a very different experience of Australia's natural landscapes.
Lizard Island Resort, Queensland
On a secluded island at the northern end of the Great Barrier Reef, Lizard Island Resort offers direct access to coral reefs, white-sand beaches and some of Australia's best diving and snorkeling. With just one resort on the island, guests can spend their days exploring the reef by private charter, relaxing on secluded beaches or dining beneath the stars.
Saffire Freycinet, Tasmania
Overlooking Great Oyster Bay and the pink granite peaks of the Hazards, Saffire Freycinet brings contemporary luxury to Tasmania's east coast. Guests can join a marine oyster experience, explore Freycinet National Park with a guide, participate in a Tasmanian devil experience, or enjoy Tasmanian food and wine while taking in the coastal landscape.
Southern Ocean Lodge, South Australia
Perched above the wild coastline of Kangaroo Island, Southern Ocean Lodge combines contemporary design with access to one of Australia's most distinctive wildlife destinations. Guided island experiences introduce guests to sea lions, kangaroos and remarkable coastal landscapes, while the lodge itself offers a front-row seat to the Southern Ocean.
Condé Nast Traveler's Standout Stays
The 2026 Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards placed three Australian lodges at the top of the Australia and New Zealand resort category, while the publication's editors recognized two more Australian properties on their prestigious Gold List.
Silky Oaks Lodge, Queensland
Set among the rainforest canopy beside the Mossman River, Silky Oaks Lodge took the top spot in the regional Readers' Choice Awards and earned a place among the world's best resorts. Its luxury treehouses provide a base for exploring the Daintree Rainforest, with guided rainforest walks, river experiences and easy access to the Great Barrier Reef.
Southern Ocean Lodge, South Australia
Kangaroo Island's celebrated clifftop retreat also earned second place in the regional Readers' Choice Awards, adding another distinction to its Michelin Three-Key recognition.
Capella Lodge, New South Wales
On World Heritage-listed Lord Howe Island, Capella Lodge offers an intimate island retreat beneath the dramatic peaks of Mount Gower and Mount Lidgbird. With a limited number of visitors permitted on the island at any one time, guests enjoy uncrowded beaches, guided hikes and snorkeling in the world's southernmost coral reef.
Two More Names on the Condé Nast Gold List
Condé Nast's Gold List is handpicked by travel editors based on personal experience, reporting and firsthand visits.
Park Hyatt Sydney, New South Wales
For travelers who prefer an urban setting, Park Hyatt Sydney offers one of the city's most recognizable addresses, directly across the harbor from the Sydney Opera House. Its waterfront location places guests within walking distance of The Rocks, Sydney Harbour Bridge and some of the city's best dining.
El Questro Homestead, Western Australia
In the remote Kimberley, El Questro Homestead sits high above the Chamberlain River, surrounded by vast cattle-station country. Private excursions take guests into ancient gorges, natural thermal springs and landscapes that few visitors to Australia experience.
More International Recognition
The 2026 La Liste World's Best Hotels selection also recognized seven members of Luxury Lodges of Australia, further highlighting the range of exceptional stays across the country.
Among them were Longitude 131°, where luxury tented pavilions face Uluṟu; qualia, an intimate Whitsunday Islands retreat; Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef, where safari-style tents sit between coastal dunes and the reef; and The Louise, a luxury retreat surrounded by the vineyards of the Barossa Valley.
Saffire Freycinet, Southern Ocean Lodge and Lizard Island Resort also appeared on the list, making them some of Australia's most widely recognized luxury properties.
What's New and What's Coming
Beyond the awards, several Australian luxury properties are introducing new accommodations, reopening after significant renovations or preparing to welcome guests in 2027.
Aurora Australis Luxury Rail Suites
Introduced April 2026
Australia's iconic rail journeys have entered a new era of luxury with the introduction of the Aurora and Australis Suites aboard The Ghan, Indian Pacific and Great Southern. The new suites combine Art Deco-inspired interiors with contemporary comforts and personalized service. The Aurora Suite offers twice the space of a Platinum cabin, while the larger Australis Suite offers three times the space. Both feature separate bedrooms, private lounges, ensuite bathrooms and curated bars, along with dedicated butler service and private in-suite dining.
With just two suites per train, travelers can cross Australia's vast landscapes in exceptional comfort, enjoying fine dining, exclusive off-train experiences and uninterrupted views of the changing scenery.
Orpheus Island Lodge, Queensland
Reopened July 2026
This private island retreat on the Great Barrier Reef has completed a refurbishment of its North Beachfront accommodations. Redesigned rooms, suites and villas feature expanded indoor-outdoor living areas, higher ceilings and outdoor bathtubs. With a limited number of guests on the island, Orpheus continues to offer a particularly intimate reef experience.
Saffire Jewel, Tasmania

Ideal for families or small groups traveling together, the villa combines the privacy of a residence with Saffire's signature hospitality and access to Tasmania's east coast.
The main lodge is also refreshing its suites and introducing new experiences, including Saffire After Dark, a guided stargazing experience.
Emirates Wolgan Valley, a Ritz-Carlton Lodge, New South Wales
Anticipated 2027 reopening
One of Australia's most anticipated luxury reopenings will bring the former Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley into the Ritz-Carlton portfolio as the brand's first Ritz-Carlton Lodge.
Located within a 7,000-acre conservation reserve in the Greater Blue Mountains region, the retreat will feature 40 private-pool villas surrounded by sandstone escarpments and eucalyptus forests. Its remote setting offers opportunities for guided nature experiences, wildlife viewing and exploring the Australian bush.
Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia
Reopening March 2027
Sal Salis is undergoing a significant refurbishment ahead of its reopening on Western Australia's Ningaloo Coast. The updated wilderness camp will feature redesigned ensuite tents, a refreshed dining area and a new bar highlighting Western Australian wines.
The experience remains centered on the extraordinary marine environment just steps from camp. Guests can snorkel directly from the beach, with seasonal opportunities to swim alongside whale sharks and humpback whales.
Bullo River Station, Northern Territory
Reopening May 2027
In the remote northwest corner of the Northern Territory, Bullo River Station is being transformed with a redesigned homestead and new guest accommodations.
The working cattle station and wildlife conservancy covers more than 400,000 acres, with landscapes ranging from red-rock escarpments to river gorges and wetlands. The redevelopment includes 12 spacious guest rooms, including a two-bedroom family suite.
Private guiding remains central to the experience, allowing guests to explore the station's landscapes, wildlife and conservation projects at their own pace.
True North Adventure Cruises
New expeditions for 2027
Celebrating 40 years of expedition cruising in 2027, True North is introducing two new voyages focused on Australia's remote marine environments.
