Tourism sustainability

Our approach to responsible travel

We consider animal welfare, local communities, cultural respect, and environmental practices when choosing the partners and experiences included in each journey.

Our approach

How we evaluate travel experiences

We have spent decades building relationships in the places we visit. Those relationships give us a closer view of how travel affects local people, natural environments, and animals.

This work changes as standards, research, and local guidance change. Our team reviews supplier information, learns through Tourism Cares and destination partners, and updates recommendations when we identify a better approach.

What we review

Responsible travel in practice

These considerations guide discussions with destination teams, accommodations, guides, and experience partners.

Communities and local economies

Tourism can support local employment and businesses when local participation is part of planning. We consider how a partner works with the surrounding community and where visitor spending is likely to go.

Culture and community involvement

Cultural experiences require the involvement of people whose history and traditions are being presented. We look for local leadership, consent, and interpretation from people with direct ties to the culture.

Environmental management

Accommodations and operators make decisions that affect water, energy, waste, habitat, and visitor pressure. We include those practices in partner conversations and reviews.

Animal welfare and wildlife

Wildlife encounters are reviewed for animal welfare, guide practices, viewing distance, and impact on habitat. For captive wildlife, we look for a documented conservation, rescue, or rehabilitation purpose.

Industry membership

A member of Tourism Cares

Tourism Cares brings the travel industry together to create positive economic, social, and environmental impact. Membership gives our team access to practical resources, education, and peers working through many of the same questions.

Our team uses these resources to compare current practices, identify gaps, and update how we evaluate partners, experiences, and internal operations.
