Day By Day

Day 1 – Fly USA to Rwanda
Today you will begin your Swain Destinations customized itinerary.

Day 2 – Welcome to Kigali, Rwanda
Upon arrival into Kigali Airport, a driver will meet you in the arrivals hall to transfer you to your accommodation. 

Kigali Serena Hotel

Day 3 – Kigali to Parc National des Volcans
A driver will meet you in the lobby of the hotel to transfer you to your Parc National des Volcans accommodation. 

Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge
Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is situated in the foothills of the mighty Virungas, which are a chain of 15,000-foot volcanoes stretching through Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Lodge is 1.86 miles from the main entrance to the Parc National des Volcans in Northwest Rwanda near the border with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The lodge is a comfortable two-hour drive from central Kigali. From the lodge, you will have magnificent views of the verdant slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes to the North and over the agricultural lowlands to the South. You can make the short journey to the Park headquarters each morning for their gorilla trek in only a few minutes; the lodge is a perfect base from which to explore this unique and fascinating corner of Africa.

Day 4 – Gorilla Trekking
This morning, drive to the edge of Parc National des Volcans where you will receive a briefing by the park's guides on the Gorillas etiquette. Following the briefing, enter the park for Gorilla tracking. Your trek will vary in length and will commence at an altitude of 2,000 meters in the upper slopes of the Volcanoes where you will then enter the forest. After locating your assigned group, you will spend one hour in their company before retracing your steps down the volcanoes. If time permits, visit the nearby little known but compellingly beautiful twin lakes Bulera & Ruhondo.

Day 5 – Gorilla Trekking

You will re-enter the Park for a second gorilla trekking, visiting a different family. In Rwanda there are four habituated gorilla groups that can be viewed by tourists. Each group can be visited by a maximum of eight people per day and the visit lasts only one hour.

You will then depart Parc National des Volcans and transfer to the Kigali Airport for your flight to Nairobi, Kenya. 

Upon arrival in Kenya, a driver will meet you to transfer you to your Nairobi accommodation.

Day 6 – Nairobi to Meru National Park
You will be transferred to the Wilson Airport Nairobi for your flight to Meru National Park. Upon arrival, a driver will transfer you to your accommodation.

Elsa's Kopje
Unashamedly romantic and beautifully styled, sculpted into Mughwango Hill, above the site of George Adamson’s original camp where he raised and released orphan lions, long before conservation became fashionable. Each cottage is crafted round the rocks, with a large bedroom, open sitting room, veranda, rock-hewn bathroom, and breath-taking views.

Day 7 – Activities in Meru National Park

Meru National Park, wild and remote, lies 10 km north of the equator between Mount Kenya and the Nyambeni Mountains, 350 km from Nairobi. Meru forms part of a larger conservation area covering 370,000 acres including the adjoining Kora, Rahole and Bisanadi Reserves. The park also incorporates an 84 km rhino sanctuary, making Meru one of the prime destinations to see rhino in their natural habitat. The birdlife is extraordinarily colourful and abundant with over 400 species of birds.

Rugged and remote, Meru National Park was rescued from oblivion thanks to Elsa’s Kopje, an environmental award-winning, boutique lodge. Visitors get the whole place to themselves: all 870 km of it, including a thriving rhino sanctuary inside the Park. Famous for large elephant herds, lion and birdlife, and more diversity of animal species than any park in East Africa; Meru is also the only National Park to permit ranger-guided bush walks. Other activities include fishing in the streams, game drives to Kora and Bisanadi National Reserves, and night game drives back to camp.

Day 8 – Meru National Park to Laikipia
Begin your day with an informative nature walk in the park before enjoying lunch at Elsa's Kopje. After lunch, you will be transferred to the Meru Airstrip for your flight to Loisaba Airstrip. Enjoy a game drive to your next accommodation.

Loisaba Tented Camp
Loisaba Conservancy is outstandingly beautiful, its abundant wildlife is truly wild and its accommodation is comfortable beyond measure. Loisaba is made for adventure: guests enjoy complete freedom to choose how they spend their time so the only barrier is your own imagination. Trek through the bush with camels, mountain bike down the escarpment, raft, horseback-ride or drive through the wild canyons of the two great rivers that span the vast property.

Day 9 – Activities at Loisaba Tented Camp

Begin your day with a walking safari with traditional Samburu guides. Return to camp for breakfast and a refreshing swim. Lunch at the Camp. Afternoon game drive or fishing in the river. Sundowners in the bush. Dinner under the stars.

Loisaba is immense: bigger than ten of the world's fully-fledged nations. You could take months exploring this land and never encounter the same view twice. We can assure you that you will not bump into anyone else and you will see the most extraordinary natural wonders - spectacular animal life that is wild, free and exhilarating to observe and a kaleidoscopic variety of birds, both endemic and migratory. Perched on the edge of an escarpment with unhindered views across the Laikipia plains to Mt Kenya, Loisaba Tented Camp is the ultimate blend of sophistication and nature. A main bar, lounge and dining area with chic Africana decor, and a tantalizing infinity pool are designed to maximize on the expansive views.

Day 10 – Laikipia to Maasai Mara National Reserve
After an early morning game drive before breakfast, enjoy lunch at the camp before flying to Maasai Mara Airstrip. You will enjoy another game drive en-route to your accommodation.

Sand River Maasai Mara 
Located on the banks of a river from which it has taken its name, Sand River Masai Mara is located within the Masai Mara National Reserve, close to the Tanzanian border. Situated on a secluded and picturesque site, the Camp replicates the heyday of exclusive permanent tented camps of the late 1920's. The interior fixtures and furnishings mirror this period perfectly, reminding all who visit of those countless Hollywood movies that have paid homage to a classic era of African adventure.

Starting Accommodation: Sand River Maasai Mara (B, L, D)

Day 11 – Game Viewing in the Maasai Mara
Rise early for breakfast before a full day game drive. Enjoy a picnic lunch served in the bush. The Maasai Mara is famous for its astounding numbers of wildlife. With both resident and transient populations of lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, elephant, to name a few, as well as over 450 bird species, the vast fertile plains are dense with game. The area has been classified among the "Seven Wonders of the World" due to the extraordinary annual migration from July to November when over 1.3 million wildebeest and zebra cross from the Serengeti to the Maasai Mara in search of greener pastures. Then you will have the opportunity to Interact with the Maasai tribe in their village. Enjoy a final farewell dinner under the stars.

Day 12 – Fly Kenya to USA
Enjoy a game drive or relax at camp on this morning at leisure. After lunch, your SkySafari flight will take you back to Wilson Airport. You will then be transferred to Nairobi International Airport for your flight to the USA. (B, L)
