In New Zealand, Wellness Happens Naturally

New Zealand

Stargazing a Mount Cook Lakeside Retreat

Steam rises from geothermal pools that predate any spa menu. Forests hold a stillness no meditation app can replicate, and some of the world's darkest skies make it easy to slow down at the end of the day.

Wellness Moments in New Zealand

In New Zealand, wellness does not have to mean spending every day at a spa. It can be built around the landscapes, experiences, and lodges you choose throughout the trip.

Forest Bathing

Forest bathing is the practice of slowing down in nature and paying attention to the sounds, scents, and textures around you. You can join an accredited nature and forest bathing guide for a mindfulness walk and tea ceremony, or follow the same principles on a self-guided walk in many parts of New Zealand. Two of our favorite places to experience forest bathing are Waiheke Island, just a short ferry ride from Auckland, and Mount Cook Lakeside Retreat on the South Island.

Geothermal Hot Pools

Rotorua’s geothermal landscape offers several ways to experience the warmth and mineral-rich waters beneath the surface. At Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa, move through seven restorative stages that combine hot and cold therapies, mineral bathing, geothermal mud, and Māori healing traditions.

For a more remote experience, take a floatplane over Mount Tarawera’s crater lakes and the steaming cliffs of Waimangu Volcanic Valley before landing on Lake Rotoiti. Tucked into a secluded bay accessible only by water, a series of lakeside hot pools invites you to soak beneath native forest while looking out across the lake.

Dark Skies

In parts of New Zealand, the sky does something most places can’t anymore: it goes completely dark. The Milky Way stretches from one horizon to the other, offering a new perspective on the day. Two of our favorite places to experience New Zealand’s dark skies are Mount Cook Lakeside Retreat, in the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, and the Kawarau Gibbston Dark Sky Park, where a twilight tour combines Central Otago wine tastings, fine dining, and stargazing.

Spa Treatments

Wellness in New Zealand extends far beyond the spa, but including a treatment is the cherry on top. At New Zealand’s luxury lodges, native botanicals, geothermal minerals, and holistic rituals bring elements of the surrounding landscape into the treatment room. Depending on where you stay, you might look out over an alpine lake, native forest, or the Pacific Ocean while you unwind.

Finding Wellness Stays in New Zealand

Restoration doesn't end with the day’s adventures. These luxury lodges immerse you in New Zealand's landscapes, each offering its own connection to the land, the sea, and the quiet that surrounds it.

Country & Coast: Wharekauhau Country Estate

Wind moves off the Pacific and across the rolling pasture at Wharekauhau, perched above the cliffs of Palliser Bay. Sheep have grazed here for generations, and exploring the working sheep station is as much a part of a stay as coastal walks and restorative spa treatments. Each offers a different way to connect with the land and daily life at Wharekauhau.

Wild Coastal Sanctuary: Rosewood Cape Kidnappers

At Rosewood Cape Kidnappers in Hawke’s Bay, cliffs drop straight to the ocean, gannets ride the updrafts, and thousands of protected acres provide sanctuary for native wildlife. Walk the headlands, play the renowned clifftop golf course, book a restorative spa treatment, or pause to take in the view.

Forest & Sea: Rosewood Kauri Cliffs

At Rosewood Kauri Cliffs in Northland, ancient kauri forest opens onto secluded beaches. Follow a trail through native bush, walk along the empty sand beaches, play the championship golf course overlooking the Pacific, or book a treatment at the spa.

Alpine Serenity: Blanket Bay

At Blanket Bay, on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, mountains rise directly from the water and reflect across the lake. Begin the morning with a hike into the hills, paddle across the still water, or ease into the day with a treatment at the spa.

Peaceful Seclusion: The Lindis

The Lindis sits quietly within the Ahuriri Valley, surrounded by tussock grass, distant mountains, and a sky that seems to stretch without end. Days naturally take on a slower rhythm here. After dark, the lodge’s remote location near the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve creates ideal conditions for guided stargazing and astrophotography beneath the southern sky.

Stargazing & Soaking: Mount Cook Lakeside Retreat

At Mount Cook Lakeside Retreat, glacier-fed Lake Pukaki stretches beyond the glass, with Aoraki/Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest peak, rising in the distance. Soak in a private hot tub overlooking the lake, then join astronomers in the Pukaki Observatory after dark for guided stargazing beneath some of the country’s clearest skies.

Restore in New Zealand

In New Zealand, wellness isn't confined to a spa. It's found in birdsong echoing through native forests, the warmth rising from geothermal springs, crisp alpine air, and night skies so dark the Milky Way stretches from horizon to horizon. Every Swain Destinations itinerary is custom designed around the traveler, with experiences and accommodations chosen to reflect your own path to restoration.
