The stay

What to know about this stay.

InterContinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef reopened in July 2019 after a $135 million redevelopment, at the northernmost point of the Whitsunday archipelago. Its 182 rooms, suites, villas and pavilions spread across four wings, with four hilltop Hayman Residences set apart for larger groups, all reached by helicopter, catamaran or private charter rather than a road, since no road gets you here.

A day trip to Whitehaven Beach is close to mandatory this far into the Whitsundays, its silica sand famously cool enough underfoot that it never quite feels hot, and diving or snorkeling the reef directly offshore rounds out the water side of a stay. The famous Hayman salt-water pool measures seven times Olympic size, with a smaller heated pool built into its center.
Beyond the stay

Experiences nearby

A day trip to Whitehaven Beach is close to mandatory once you're this far into the Whitsundays, its silica sand famously cool enough underfoot that it never quite feels hot, and diving or snorkeling the reef directly offshore rounds out the water side of a stay. Island Escapade runs a speedboat out to nearby snorkeling and picnic spots for guests wanting something more independent, and a scenic flight over the reef and archipelago reframes the whole trip from above. Reaching Hayman by helicopter, catamaran or private charter, since no road gets you here, is itself part of the experience rather than a logistics hurdle to get past.
