The stay

What to know about this stay.

Wilderness Lodge Arthur's Pass sits on a 4,000-acre high-country merino sheep station and nature reserve midway between Christchurch and the West Coast, four Alpine View suites with their own spa baths and 20 simpler but no less scenic Mountain View rooms, all without TVs or radios to keep the focus on the views. The all-inclusive tariff builds in one to two hours of guided outdoor activity every day, alpine hiking one morning, kayaking a mountain lake the next, a sheepdog demonstration the day after that.

Full-day trips push further into limestone caves, glacier basins and kea-spotting country most South Island itineraries never reach. The lodge operates seasonally, open October through April only.
Beyond the stay

Experiences nearby

The all-inclusive tariff here builds in one to two hours of guided outdoor activity every day, and the range genuinely varies: alpine hiking one morning, kayaking a mountain lake the next, a sheepdog demonstration the day after that. Full-day trips push further into limestone caves, glacier basins and kea-spotting country that most South Island itineraries never reach. Rooms deliberately skip televisions and radios, a choice that sounds austere until you realize how much it changes the pace of an evening here, spent instead looking out at alpine views from a working high-country station.
