Huka Lodge

Huka Lodge has been synonymous with New Zealand fly fishing since 1924, and a day on the Waikato River with one of the lodge's personal guides is the reason many guests book in the first place, whether they have cast a line before or not. Lake Taupo asks to be seen from the water too: a private cruiser can run out to the Ngatoroirangi Mine Bay Maori rock carvings, faces cut thirty feet into cliffs that appear only once you round the headland by boat. Slower afternoons mean a walk to Huka Falls, where the Waikato compresses into a single turquoise chute and thunders through with a force that is strangely mesmerizing to just stand and watch, or nine holes at nearby Wairakei before the light turns gold over the hills. Dinner becomes its own small ceremony each night, moving between the formal Dining Room, the river facing deck, a private Wine Cellar table, or the original Piper Room cottage for something smaller and quieter. A century of guests returning here, through a world war and a major 2025 refurbishment, says something about what the lodge gets right.
