Along the drive south to Rotorua, the countryside begins to look uncannily familiar. You have arrived in the Shire.

Hobbiton is the world's largest green film set and the only one preserved in its natural setting. Forty-four hobbit holes dot the hillside above the Mill and the double-arch bridge, while the Party Tree still stands where Bilbo's eleventy-first birthday celebration lit up the night. Duck through the round door of a hobbit hole, pause outside Bag End to take in the view across the rolling hills, then wander to the Green Dragon Inn where a well-earned pint marks your first full day in Middle-earth.

Rotorua sits atop one of the world's most active geothermal landscapes, and a day with a local naturalist reveals just how alive the earth is beneath your feet. Wander through mineral-stained terraces, steaming craters, bubbling mud pools, and hot springs that shift from brilliant cobalt to vivid chartreuse. At Wai-O-Tapu, even the landscape feels otherworldly, while the Lady Knox Geyser sends water skyward like clockwork.

The afternoon turns from the story of the land to the people who have called it home for centuries. At Te Puia, watch master carvers and weavers preserve traditions passed through generations, visit the Rotowhio Marae, and stand beside the powerful Pohutu Geyser as it erupts high above the surrounding valley. Together, these experiences reveal both the forces that shaped this landscape and the culture that continues to shape its identity.

Stand beneath the towering trees of Rivendell, follow the paths where Gandalf and Saruman walked through the Gardens of Isengard, and trace the banks of the Anduin before hiding from the Nazgûl at the very spot where Frodo and the Hobbits scrambled beneath the roots in the "Get Off the Road" scene on Mount Victoria. Throughout the day, familiar landscapes appear around every bend, blurring the line between New Zealand and Middle-earth.

The journey continues behind the scenes at Wētā Workshop, where artists, sculptors, armorers, and prop makers transformed Tolkien's world from page to screen. Surrounded by handcrafted weapons, armor, creatures, and miniatures, you'll gain a new appreciation for the remarkable craftsmanship and learn a few best-kept-secrets of the trade.

The journey continues to Queenstown, into the landscapes that became some of Middle-earth's most memorable realms.

The Dart River valley became many places in Middle-earth, including Isengard, Lothlórien, Ithilien, and the Pillars of the Kings. A jet boat carries you through the river's ever-shifting braided channels, with the snow-capped Southern Alps rising on every side and hidden valleys appearing around each bend.

At Rockburn in Paradise, step ashore for a guided walk beneath towering beech trees. As you wander through native forest, your guide shares Māori history, early colonial life, and the remarkable story of how this untouched wilderness was transformed into some of Middle-earth's most iconic landscapes.

Today's journey reaches farther across the Queenstown region, revealing just how much of Middle-earth lies within an hour of this small city.

Follow the shores of Lake Wakatipu to Glenorchy and into the Paradise region of Mount Aspiring National Park, where Lothlórien, Fangorn, Isengard, and Dunharrow all found their home on screen. Later, travel through Gibbston Valley, Arrowtown, and the dramatic Skippers Canyon Road, where scenes including the Ford of Bruinen, the Gladden Fields, and the Pillars of the Kings were filmed against some of the South Island's most spectacular landscapes.

The film sets are long gone, but the landscapes that made them believable remain unchanged. Your guide brings each location back to life with stories from the production, revealing why this valley, this river bend, or this mountain pass became an unforgettable corner of Middle-earth. Before returning to Queenstown, try your hand at panning for "elven gold" along the river's edge.

From the rugged peaks surrounding Aoraki / Mount Cook to the glacier-fed lakes and sweeping plains of Mackenzie Country, the landscapes continue to unfold with cinematic scale. Pause beside the turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo and the Church of the Good Shepherd before continuing across the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch, where your New Zealand story draws toward its final chapter.

Few locations in New Zealand are as instantly recognizable to The Lord of the Rings fans as Mount Sunday.

Hidden within the wide-open landscapes of the Canterbury high country, this solitary hill became Edoras, the windswept capital of the Riders of Rohan. Although the film set has long since been removed, the landscape remains exactly as it appeared on screen, making it remarkably easy to imagine the banners of Rohan fluttering in the mountain wind.
