Three distinct settings

The lodge is part of the reason to travel.

South Australia's leading lodges sit in places that would carry a journey on their own. Southern Ocean Lodge follows a limestone cliff on Kangaroo Island. Sequoia looks across Piccadilly Valley in the Adelaide Hills. Arkaba occupies a former sheep station managed as a wildlife conservancy in the Flinders Ranges.

The quality of the route depends on the connections between them. We match flight times, private transfers and the right number of nights so the traveler receives the lodge experience as well as the region around it.

Kangaroo Island

Southern Ocean Lodge faces the island's south coast.

Twenty-five suites curve along the limestone cliffs of Kangaroo Island's south coast, each looking out toward the Southern Ocean. Days extend beyond the lodge with guided island experiences included in the stay, while private touring creates a more personalized day, with the guide, experiences and timing shaped around your party.

Adelaide Hills

Sequoia places fourteen suites above Piccadilly Valley.

Sequoia is an adults-only lodge on Mount Lofty Estate, about twenty minutes from central Adelaide. Every suite faces the Piccadilly Valley, with artesian spring-fed hot pools, an infinity pool and guided walks, tastings and seasonal experiences all part of the stay. Close to Adelaide but surrounded by the Adelaide Hills and wine country, it makes an easy transition into or out of an Australian journey.

Room choice changes the stay.

At Sequoia, every suite shares the Piccadilly Valley outlook, with differences in position and inclusions. At Southern Ocean Lodge, upgrades vary by category and may include a private plunge pool, separate living space or a multi-bedroom layout. We consider how you want to use the space, who you're traveling with and the level of privacy you prefer before recommending the right suite.

Flinders Ranges

Arkaba brings conservation into the stay.

Five homestead guestrooms accommodate no more than ten guests across a 60,000-acre private conservancy. Guided walks and safari-style drives reveal the landscape through wildlife, geology and active restoration. The all-inclusive stay brings those days together with meals, South Australian wines and time back at the homestead.

Private connections

Choose how you want to arrive.

Kangaroo Island can be reached by a short flight from Adelaide or by ferry from the Fleurieu Peninsula, while the Flinders Ranges can be reached by road or private charter. We consider how you want to travel as carefully as where you want to stay, choosing connections that complement the experience and fit naturally into the larger itinerary.

Cellar doors

Behind the cellar door.

The Adelaide Hills, Barossa and McLaren Vale each offer opportunities for private tastings and more personal access to the people behind the wines. We arrange a private driver and build the day around a considered number of cellar doors, leaving time for a good meal and meaningful time spent at each cellar door.

Luxury travel in South Australia, answered.

What are the leading luxury lodges in South Australia?

Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island, Sequoia in the Adelaide Hills and Arkaba in the Flinders Ranges are three of South Australia's leading luxury lodges. Southern Ocean Lodge combines coastal wilderness with guided island experiences, Sequoia pairs an intimate adults-only stay with Adelaide Hills wine country, and Arkaba offers an all-inclusive stay on a private wildlife conservancy. Each can anchor a South Australia itinerary or be combined with the others.

How many nights should I stay at Southern Ocean Lodge?

Three nights is ideal for Southern Ocean Lodge, allowing time for guided Kangaroo Island experiences, the lodge itself and some flexibility for weather. Two nights can work with well-timed flights, but make for a more condensed stay.

Are there family-friendly luxury lodges in South Australia?

Yes. Luxury lodges in South Australia have different age policies. Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island accepts children aged 10 and over, while Arkaba in the Flinders Ranges accepts guests aged 12 and over, with younger children possible when the property is booked for exclusive use. Sequoia in the Adelaide Hills is adults-only for guests aged 18 and over. We match the lodge to the ages and needs of the travelers in your party.

How do you reach Arkaba from Adelaide?

Arkaba is about a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Adelaide and can also be reached by private charter. Driving lets you experience the changing landscape between Adelaide and the Flinders Ranges, while flying offers an aerial perspective of the Outback and reduces the transfer time to 90 minutes.

Are private guides included at South Australia's luxury lodges?

Guided experiences are included at several of South Australia's luxury lodges, but they are not necessarily private. Arkaba includes guided conservancy experiences, while Southern Ocean Lodge offers scheduled island experiences shared with other lodge guests. Private touring can be arranged separately, subject to availability. Sequoia includes a program of lodge experiences and can arrange private touring beyond the property.

When should luxury South Australia lodges be booked?

South Australia's small luxury lodges are best booked well in advance, particularly for Australian summer, holiday periods and major events. Properties such as Southern Ocean Lodge, Sequoia and Arkaba have limited numbers of suites, so booking early provides more choice of dates and room categories and makes it easier to build the rest of the itinerary around your preferred stay.
