The Indian Pacific travelling past the white salt pan of Lake Hart in South Australia
Indian Pacific · Official Swain partner

The Indian Pacific, planned into your Australia itinerary.

As an official Journey Beyond Rail partner, Swain chooses the service level and route with you, then connects the crossing with the cities, wine regions and stays around it.

Sydney to Perth

A crossing named for two oceans.

The Indian Pacific runs between Sydney and Perth, taking its name from the Indian and Pacific Oceans it connects. The full coast-to-coast crossing covers 4,352 kilometres, including a stretch across the Nullarbor Plain that is among the longest straight sections of railway track in the world. Swain is an official Journey Beyond Rail partner and plans the train as one part of a broader Australia itinerary, built around the cities and regions on either end.

Adelaide, the Barossa Valley and Hahndorf.

Stops around Adelaide give travellers time off the train in South Australian wine country. Published Off Train Experience options for this leg have included the Barossa Valley and the historic German-settled village of Hahndorf, alongside time in Adelaide itself. Which excursion runs on a given departure depends on the fare class and schedule booked.

Cook, Rawlinna and Kalgoorlie.

West of Adelaide the train crosses the Nullarbor Plain, with stops at remote sidings such as Cook and Rawlinna before reaching the Western Australian goldfields town of Kalgoorlie. This stretch of track was completed in 1917, when construction crews working from Port Augusta and Kalgoorlie met at Ooldea after five years of building by hand.
