Pretoria, South Africa

The journeys begin with a railway workshop at Capital Park.

Rohan Vos sent the first commercial Rovos Rail train into the Eastern Transvaal on April 29, 1989. The company remains privately owned and family-run.

Capital Park in Pretoria became the operating base, restoration workshop and principal station. Most Rovos journeys begin or end there, which makes Pretoria an important part of the itinerary even when Cape Town, Victoria Falls or a longer cross-border route is the main draw.

Every suite has a private bathroom, air-conditioning, storage, a safe, tea facilities and daily service from a host. Bed layouts and carriage configurations vary, so Swain confirms the exact category and setup before booking.

Meals and public rooms set the daily rhythm.

The observation car has picture windows and an open-air rear balcony. The lounge provides another place to read or talk, while the Club Car is the designated smoking area.

The route determines the pace of the whole trip.

Current journeys range from focused links between Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and Victoria Falls to longer cross-border expeditions. Some longer programs include flights, hotel or lodge nights and substantial off-train touring. Swain compares the operating direction, border requirements, excursion pattern and time aboard before placing a route into the wider itinerary. Schedules and routings can change with railway capacity and local operating conditions.

Pretoria to Cape Town

The Cape route changes as the train moves south.

The journey passes from the Highveld through the Great Karoo and the Hex River Valley before reaching Cape Town. Current itineraries include off-train visits along the way. The operating direction and schedule determine their order, so Swain checks the confirmed program before arranging the nights on either side.

Dress, mobility and dietary details need an early conversation.

Daywear is smart casual, and evening attire is more formal. There are no televisions or radios in the suites or public cars. Vintage carriages, boarding steps and off-train excursions can affect suitability for travelers with limited mobility. Dietary requirements, allergies and medical conditions should be raised before confirmation so Rovos can advise what is possible for the selected train and route.

The train should connect cleanly with the rest of Africa.

Planning a Rovos Rail journey.

What is the difference between Pullman, Deluxe and Royal Suites?

Pullman and Pullman Gold suites are approximately seven square meters, Deluxe Suites are approximately ten square meters, and Royal Suites are approximately sixteen square meters. Royal Suites include a private lounge area, a bath and a separate shower. Bed configurations vary by carriage and route, so Swain confirms the exact setup before booking.

What should I wear aboard Rovos Rail?

Smart-casual clothing is appropriate during the day. Evening attire is more formal, especially at dinner. Longer journeys may include themed evenings. Rovos provides the current dress guidance with the selected itinerary.

What is included on a Rovos Rail journey?

Inclusions depend on the route. The published programs commonly include the suite, onboard meals, specified beverages, room and bar service, limited laundry, listed excursions, entrance fees and government taxes. Flights, pre- and post-train hotels, visas, insurance, gratuities, French Champagne and personal purchases are commonly excluded unless the itinerary says otherwise.

How long are Rovos Rail journeys?

The current portfolio includes short journeys of a few nights and expeditions lasting more than two weeks. The right length depends on how much time you want aboard, the number of off-train excursions and the countries you want to include. Swain confirms the current duration and operating direction for your dates.

Can I combine Rovos Rail with Cape Town or a safari?

Yes. Cape Town, the Winelands, Victoria Falls and Southern African safari regions can be planned before or after many Rovos routes. The useful sequence depends on the train direction, regional flights, border requirements and lodge availability.

Can Rovos Rail accommodate mobility or dietary requirements?

Suitability must be confirmed case by case. Vintage carriages, boarding steps and some excursions can present mobility limitations. Dietary requirements, allergies, medical conditions and requested assistance should be disclosed before confirmation so Rovos can advise what can be supported.

Can the route or schedule change?

Yes. Rovos operates across national rail networks and borders, so signalling, track conditions, railway capacity, border procedures and local operating requirements can affect timing, routing and excursions. Swain communicates material updates and adjusts the surrounding itinerary when needed.
