The stay

What to know about this stay.

Joy's Camp sits in Shaba National Reserve, on the eastern edge of Kenya's greater Samburu ecosystem, built on the site of naturalist Joy Adamson's former home. Adamson released Penny, the leopard from her final book, from this same site, giving the camp a direct link to one of conservation writing's best-known stories.

Seven double and three twin tented rooms sit on raised platforms overlooking a natural spring where elephant, lion, buffalo and the rare desert-adapted wildlife of Samburu compete for water. Game drives across Shaba and the wider Samburu ecosystem focus on species found nowhere else in Kenya, Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe and Somali ostrich among them, a distinctive alternative to the more heavily visited Maasai Mara.
Beyond the stay

Experiences nearby

Game drives across Shaba and the wider Samburu ecosystem turn up species found almost nowhere else in Kenya: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk standing upright on their hind legs to browse, and the pale, true-wild lions of this arid country. The camp sits on the site of naturalist Joy Adamson's former home, where she once released Penny the leopard from her final book, a direct link to one of conservation writing's most enduring stories, and the eastern sector of the reserve belongs to the camp alone.
