Victoria Falls: One of the Seven Natural Wonders
Victoria Falls

Of all Africa's natural wonders, few leave an impression like Victoria Falls. Straddling the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, it is the largest single sheet of falling water on Earth and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
The Smoke that Thunders
Locally known as Mosi-oa-Tunya — "the Smoke that Thunders" — the falls are fed by the Zambezi River, which widens to more than a mile before plunging over a basalt cliff. The roar is deafening and the spray rises hundreds of metres, visible from far away. Get close and a poncho won't keep you dry — that's part of the thrill.
Experiencing the falls
- Both sides have their charms — Zimbabwe offers the widest panoramic views; Zambia lets you get closer, including the adrenaline of Devil's Pool in low-water season.
- Lunar rainbows appear on clear full-moon nights, thanks to the immense spray.
- Beyond the falls — sunset Zambezi cruises, white-water rafting and helicopter flights.
