Orpheus Island Experiences
Orpheus showcases a plethora of once in a lifetime experiences! Its principal dive sites boast 1,100 of the 1,500 species of fish on the reef; the local waters are a fisherman's playground and home to the most sought after reef fish species in the world; and guests can take the helm of a dingy packed with a gourmet picnic hamper and discover the many pristine coves that fringe Orpheus. Alternatively, Orpheus provides the perfect backdrop for a more private interlude if guests wish to simply shut off from the outside world and succumb to a unique indigenous-inspired spa treatment.
Foodie Experience: Best suited to the island’s tropical environment, Orpheus offers a light, contemporary and daily-changing menu that showcases the riches of the region through a fusion cuisine. Celebrating a bounty of locally-sourced, wholesome and freshly caught and grown seasonal delights, each meal tells a tale and promises to stimulate both the mind and palate. With a strong focus on sustainability, the island’s veggie patch provides the chefs with a constant supply of fresh produce and resident chickens lay fresh free-range eggs for guest meals.
Signature Dining Experience: The island’s signature dining experience is Dining with the Tides. One evening of your stay, enjoy a private dinner on the pier backlit by the sun’s setting rays over the Coral Sea. Your intimate dinner for two will be served under a starlit canopy and minimal interruptions will ensure a unique and romantic dining experience.
Dinghy Experience: Take the helm of your motorized dinghy and discover the many pristine bays and reefs that fringe Orpheus. With more private beaches than guests, beach comb and enjoy a chef-prepared picnic hamper in absolute seclusion! After lunch, snorkel straight off the beach into pellucid blue-green waters and discover the mystical coral gardens and tropical fish of this underwater world. A must-see is the giant clam nursery located in Pioneer Bay. The nursery is populated by 300 impressive mollusks, each weighing 150 - 200kg, stretching 3ft in width and donning ruffled chinchilla lips.
Hinchinbrook Island Experience: Hinchinbrook Island is Australia’s largest island National Park and is spectacularly punctuated by abrupt headlands, waterfalls, secluded sandy pocket beaches, mangrove-lined estuaries and dense rainforest. You can experience Hinchinbrook either by helicopter or boat charter. Highlights of the boat charter include Highlights of this tour include guided walks along rainforest-clad trails to the famous Zoe and Mulligan waterfalls and saltwater crocodile spotting in the island’s waterways.
Diving and Snorkeling Experience: The fringing reef surrounding Orpheus is one of the Great Barrier Reef’s most spectacular and diverse marine wonderlands. Orpheus’ principal dive sites are home to 1,100 of the 1,500 species of fish on the reef, 340 of the 359 varieties of hard corals and one of the region’s largest collections of soft corals.
In this natural aquarium, dive and snorkel amongst a myriad of world-class reef habitats, recent plane and ship wrecks, submerged indigenous sites and, if you’re lucky, alongside green turtles, manta rays, bull rays, reef sharks and humpback whales.
Fishing Experience: The Great Barrier Reef is a fisherman’s playground and the waters surrounding Orpheus provide some of the most sought after reef and game fishing species in the world. An excellent array of table fish including Coral Trout, Sweetlip, Red Emperor and Giant Trevally can be caught locally. For the avid anglers amongst us, a trip to the outer reef is where the famous pelagic species such as the Black Marlin, Dog Tooth Tuna, Spanish Mackeral and Wahoo come to play.
Following your fishing expedition, let us take you ashore to a secluded cove where your daily catch can be grilled on an open fire whilst you enjoy an ice-cold beer or wine with your fellow fisherman. Alternatively, have your catch prepared to your liking by our Executive Chef and served for dinner back at the lodge.
