Things To Do

Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki offers a diverse program of shorter complimentary and longer-charged guided nature activities.

Challenging Wilderness Seacoast, Fiordland Crested Penguin and New Zealand Fur Seals Adventure
The "signature walk", this is a dramatic and challenging walk along a rugged section of the Tasman seacoast. It requires moderate fitness and provides great wildlife viewing opportunities. You will see New Zealand fur seals and penguins (in season). Enjoy refreshments beside a waterfall tumbling down to the beach after some climbing over volcanic beach boulders. Search for natural beach treasures and finally climb steeply up from the shore into the dense rain forest.

Easier Wilderness Seacoast, Hector's Dolphins and Seashore Ecology
A gentle walk along a beautiful yet rarely visited piece of seacoast. You will discover rock pools, islands and coastal caves and maybe get a chance to see Hector’s dolphins, the world’s smallest marine dolphin species, and New Zealand fur seals. Following the coast, you can search for polished beach pebbles and wave-sculpted driftwood.

Trout Fishing
The lake and rivers have a good number of Brown Trout and in March & April, there are some Quinnat Salmon. The lodge has basic spinning rods with lures. Fly fishers must bring their own gear. You will need a fishing license to fish in the area - you can purchase these from the Lodge.

Tawaki Penguin Discovery Trips from the Wilderness Lodge (August 1 - December 10)
Walk on your own at Monro Beach or join a Wilderness Lodge guide to several secret, protected sites. Watch these delightful birds cross the beach from the Tasman Sea to their rainforest nests. Under a special Conservation Department guiding licence, since 1989 the Lodge has offered guided trips every day in the season to view tawaki penguins and was instrumental in the creation of a Wildlife Refuge to protect their breeding grounds.
