Day By Day

Day 1 – USA to Auckland
Today you will begin your Swain Destinations customized itinerary. Please note, international air has not been included in this package price.

Day 2 – Cross the International Date Line
Cross the International Date Line, an imaginary line on the surface of the Earth that runs from the North to the South Pole - and defines one calendar day from the next. Crossing the International Date Line adds one day (24 hours) traveling west, and subtracts one day (24 hours) traveling east.

Day 3 – Welcome to Auckland, New Zealand
Upon arrival, you will be met with your private transfer to your hotel.

Auckland, ‘City of Sails’, located between two stunning harbors, enjoys a mild year-round climate. Auckland is the country's most visited region and largest urban area, offering exciting activities and great shopping.

The city lies across a 7-mile wide volcanic isthmus separating two harbors. The Waitemata to the east opens into the Hauraki Gulf, and to the Pacific Ocean. The Manukau Harbour to the west offers many estuaries and surf beaches and opens to the Tasman Sea.

Day 4 – Auckland to Treetops Lodge

Day 7 – Treetops Lodge to Wharekauhau Lodge
Private transfer from Treetops Lodge to Rotorua. From here you will board a domestic flight from Rotorua to Wellington.

Take a helicopter transfer from Wellington Airport to Wharekauhau. The flight takes you over Wellington and then along the coastline of Palliser Bay before landing at the front of Wharekauhau Lodge - a spectacular entrance!

Wharekauhau Lodge offers a relaxed & yet ultimately luxurious environment to soak in some New Zealand hospitality. Set on over 5,000 acres of private land including rivers, forests and lakes, it commands spectacular vistas of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding New Zealand farm-scape, with the main lodge is situated at the heart of it all. As you wander into the grand lodge, what catches the eye is the awe-inspiring view over Palliser Bay, framed perfectly from every vantage point.

Day 8 – Martinborough Wine Tour
Enjoy half a day visiting Martinborough and some of the 29 boutique wineries situated around this rural village. Discover the pleasures of the local wineries, tasting some of the world's best Pinot Noir - international wine experts rate Martinborough as one of the finest wine growing regions in New Zealand. Your guide will take you around a choice of the best vineyards, and serious enthusiasts will have the opportunity to meet with wine makers for a behind the scenes tour of a vineyard. Included in this tour will be lunch at one of the vineyard cafes, or a cafe in the village - where you will also have the opportunity to visit the boutique shops should you wish.

Day 9 – Day at Leisure, Wharekauhau Lodge
At your leisure to explore true country living in an environment which has been described as 'one of the most spectacular farms on earth'. With over 5,000 acres, including forest, lakes, mountains, bush and open country, as well as 16 miles of dramatic coastline, there is no shortage of activities to keep you busy. Some of the activities include fishing, cycling, off-road safaris, winery and garden tours, being a farm hand for the day, tennis, golf and more.

Day 10 – Wharekauhau Lodge to Blanket Bay
Enjoy a 90 minute drive through the surrounding countryside with a knowledgeable driver from Wharekauhau Lodge to Wellington Airport.

Once arriving at the Wellington Airport you will board a domestic flight to Queenstown. Upon arrival into Queenstown you will be met by your driver for a private transfer to Blanket Bay.

Blanket Bay is situated at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu, two miles south of Glenorchy and just 40 minutes from Queenstown. Built in the grand style of the finest alpine lodges, it is finished with native timber and stone. At the heart of the Lodge is a 30-foot high Great Room with its massive log fireplace, vaulted wharf, timber beams and antique wooden floors. There are several dining options, meals may be taken in the main dining room or a private dining room, both with views across the lake and large log burning fires.

Day 11 – Milford Ultimate Helicopter Tour
Discover a labyrinth of valleys and mountains as you take a helicopter tour west over the Main Divide of the Southern Alps. See Lake Te Anau and follow the Milford Track past the Sutherland Falls on this extensive tour to Milford Sound. Walk through native rainforest for a perfect photo opportunity. You will fly along the fiord to a seal colony or remote beach on the isolated coast of Fiordland. A glacier landing on the return flight will enable you to fill the ice bucket for your champagne luncheon at a goldminer's cottage hidden in the mountains. This trip has been described as an experience of a lifetime and takes in some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.

Day 12 – Dart River Wilderness Safari
You have a choice of a morning or afternoon excursion. Transfer from Blanket Bay to Glenorchy and the mouth of the Dart River to board the 18 foot specially prepared jet boat . The Wilderness Safari takes you on a spectacular 90 minute jet boat journey through the Dart's ever-changing braided river system, where you'll be surrounded by snow-covered peaks, hidden valleys and waterfalls. It includes an easy guided 30-40 minute walk through the 'Heritage Trail' at Paradise, where your knowledgeable guide will enliven your walk with an informative and entertaining commentary about the ancient native beech forest, the unique flora and fauna, as well as the fascinating Maori and colonial history of the area. You'll also journey by coach via a scenic back-road route, while hearing stories about the surrounding countryside and stopping to view scenery that has formed the epic backdrop for many international films, including 'The Lord of the Rings'.

Day 13 – Blanket Bay to Otahuna Lodge
You will be transferred by private car from Blanket Bay to Queenstown Airport for a domestic flight to Christchurch. 

Upon arrival into Christchurch you will be met with your private transfer vehicle that will take you to Otahuna Lodge, about a twenty-five minute Journey.

Tucked away in Tai Tapu, just a twenty minute drive from Christchurch, on the glorious South Island of New Zealand is Otahuna Lodge. Built in 1895 for Sir Heaton Rhodes, a high-profile pioneer of Canterbury, the homestead is considered one of the best examples of unspoiled Queen Anne architecture in Australasia. Praised for its irregular shape, romantic rooflines, extensive use of New Zealand timber, and elaborate architectural detail, Otahuna is now protected by a Category One listing from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

Day 14 – Akaroa & Swim with Dolphins
Depart Christchurch for your tour to Akaroa over the beautiful Banks Peninsula, formed following violent eruptions of two ancient volcanoes. The high summit route gives glorious views of Akaroa Harbour, the Canterbury Plains, the distant Southern Alps and the remote bays and farmlands.

We visit the Barry's Bay Cheese Factory for a tasting of locally made cheeses. Enjoy the quaint colonial style architecture and wander around the charming 150 year old French harbourside village of Akaroa with it's museum of settlers' history, art and craft shops and studios and al fresco cafes and wine bars. From the unique, specially designed boats you will enter the water and the private domain of one of nature's most lovable sea mammals. Found only in New Zealand, the Hector's Dolphin is the world's smallest oceanic dolphin. You may watch the dolphins just feet away, get fantastic photos and if conditions permit, go dolphin swimming. Your excursion today includes travel by luxury minicoach, cheese factory visit, morning and afternoon tea (picnic-style), cafe lunch in Akaroa, swim with the Hector's Dolphins - an eco-marine adventure and informative commentary.

Day 15 – At leisure, Christchurch
Christchurch, the city of parks and gardens, trees and beauty, is also buzzing with street life. Wine bars, street cafes and exciting entertainment gives the central city vitality unique in New Zealand. Christchurch is said to be the most English city outside England. The downtown district focuses on Cathedral Square, where you’ll find buskers, speakers and the eccentric Wizard of Christchurch (who is classified as a living work of art).

You can sedately cruise the Avon River by punt, on its meandering course through town, under many bridges and past historic landmarks, or do your own thing by canoe. Vintage car, horse and carriage, hot air ballooning and guided walking tours are just a few ways to explore the Garden City.

Day 16 – Christchurch to USA (Via Auckland)
