Tour of Jodhpur And Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort stands a hundred feet in splendor on a perpendicular cliff, 400 feet above the sky line of Jodhpur. Polished red sand stone stands imposingly invincible, yet with a strange haunting beauty that beckons. Much has been written about the Citadel of the Sun, for truly, it is one of the most impressive in all Rajasthan. Perhaps this is the most majestic of Rajasthan's forts, described by Rudyard Kipling as 'The creation of angels, fairies and giants'. Mehrangarh's forbidding ramparts are in sharp contrast to the flamboyantly decorated palaces within. Founded in 1459, the sandstone fort was added to by later rulers between 17th and 19th centuries. The royal apartments within the fort now form part of an outstanding museum. Its rich and varied collection includes a golden throne, fine miniature paintings, traditional costumes and fascinating weapons. Particularly magnificent are the restored royal chambers, which present a vivid picture of princely life and culture in Rajasthan. The current head of the Rathore clan and custodian of the fort, Maharaja Gaj Singh II, has preserved the buildings and developed the museum as a record of the lives of his predecessors. His ancestors ruled the state of Marwar and over many generations built this architectural treasure, and it falls to him to ensure that their legacy is maintained and understood.
